For the first personal exhibition by the artists it represents, Backslash Gallery is giving over its space to Luc Schuhmacher. His sound installations spread across the walls and wrap the viewer in a disquieting and captivating world.
Luc Schuhmacher records his voice using a humble Dictaphone. Sentence by sentence, word by word, the stories come together, take on a new form, sometimes unadorned, often in fits and starts. And the voice melds with the feelings of the audience, who find themselves in limbo somewhere between the real and the imaginary. The announcement of a father’s death, an abortive meeting in a taxi, a forgotten memory of a nightmare… Are they autobiographic accounts or complete fictions? The artist leaves the viewer guessing. He thus creates a disconcerting relationship between each protagonist in the exhibition, where his characteristic tessitura is heightened by a feeling of instability brought about by a loss of bearings.
The sound installations are sometimes accompanied by the objects or situations that inspired them, as though the artist’s voice is being endlessly mirrored. The remains of a rosebush abandoned on the floor conjure up the pain of an ill friend. A book that has been stitched up and cleaned up with antiseptic reveals the original inspiration of the video Histoires sans anesthésie (stories without anaesthetic). The space for listening to the tale of a nightmare is totally dark. Old photographs litter the floor, illustrating the silence recorded on tape.
For the exhibition opening, short taxi rides will be organised to listen to the work Le temps qu'il nous reste est de plus en plus court (we have less and less time left) and the exhibition space will be plunged into darkness on several occasions for the piece entitled Les larmes de cutter (tears of the craft knife).
Luc Schuhmacher’s work was exhibited during the 2006 Nuit Blanche in Paris and at Mac Val the same year. The video Histoires sans anesthésie is being shown for the first time.

Pour la première exposition personnelle des artistes qu'elle représente, Backslash Gallery confie son espace à Luc Schuhmacher, dont les pièces sonores se déploient sur les murs et enveloppent le spectateur dans un univers troublant et désarmant.
Luc Schuhmacher enregistre sa voix à l'aide d'un simple dictaphone. Phrase après phrase, mot après mot, les histoires se recomposent, se réinventent, parfois décharnées, souvent saccadées. Et la voix se mêle aux sentiments de l'auditoire qui se trouve alors perdu quelque part entre le réel et l'imaginaire. L'annonce du décès du père, une rencontre avortée dans un taxi, un souvenir oublié de cauchemar… S'agit-il de récits autobiographiques ou d'histoires créées de toutes pièces? L'artiste laisse le spectateur dans le doute. S'installe dès lors un rapport troublant entre chaque protagoniste de l'exposition où la tessiture si caractéristique de Luc Schuhmacher s'ajoute au sentiment instable de perte de repère.
Les pièces sonores sont parfois accompagnées des objets ou des situations qui les ont inspirées, comme une mise en abîme de la voix de l'artiste. Les restes d'un rosier abandonnés par terre évoquent la douleur d'un ami malade. Un livre suturé et cicatrisé à la Bétadine dévoile l'inspiration originale de la vidéo Histoires sans anesthésie. Le noir total investit l'espace pour écouter le récit d'un cauchemar. De vieilles photographies jonchant le sol illustrent le silence enregistré sur bande magnétique.
A l'occasion du vernissage de l'exposition, de courtes promenades en taxi seront organisées pour écouter l'œuvre Le temps qu'il nous reste est de plus en plus court et l'espace d'exposition sera à plusieurs reprises plongé dans le noir pour la pièce intitulée Les larmes de cutter.
Le travail de Luc Schuhmacher a notamment été exposé pendant la Nuit Blanche de 2006 et au Mac Val la même année. La vidéo Histoires sans anesthésie est ici montrée pour la première fois.
