Backslash Gallery is delighted to invite you to the first of a series of exhibitions designed as a correspondence showcasing the different worlds of the guest artists. A new cycle will begin each spring, offering an intimate view of a rich and varied selection of artistic expressions as conveyed by a group of contemporary young artists.
This first event draws the viewer into a conversation between Julie Legrand and Romain Rivière, two artists whose recurrent explorations of certain specific themes and media result in an approach that borders on the serial, if not obsessional. The gallery space offers a window onto their favorite media: glass for Julie Legrand and photography for Romain Rivière. The exhibition design is dense and powerful, creating a dialogue between the two different artistic worlds.
Julie Legrand subjects glass to a series of disconcerting investigations, producing visual caprices that shake up the viewer’s perception. The artist confronts the material’s fragility with coarser elements, such as a motorcycle tire or sponge, and inculcates the resulting whole with her off-beat vision. The glass seems to opt for self-imposed withdrawal, as though wishing to escape from the ambiguity that forces it into opposition with the material it is paired with. “My installations are rooted in a relationship between stasis and movement. Most of them, even when they don’t actually move, contain a tension, weighing, pushing, pressing, gripping, interlinking, flowing, pouring, attracting, drawing together,” says the artist.
Romain Rivière’s photographs lie on the dividing line between the most direct form of aestheticism and social analysis. The beautifully controlled images hint at a hidden and caustic analysis of the current antinomies that characterize our civilization, pointing to the heightened desires of a conflicting Western world. They are advertising signs dreamed up by the artist but photographed from behind, as though to lend them an innocuous or even uncertain air, despite their highly colored and loudly assertive facades. They are fisherman’s huts teetering between images of the favela and the Western dream of getting back to nature. But the huts go up in flames, highlighting the possible obsolescence of a world built on contradiction, pulled between the different utopias that govern our societies.

La galerie Backslash est heureuse de vous convier au premier rendez-vous d’une série d’expositions visant à montrer les univers d’artistes invités sous une forme de correspondance. Le cycle, de retour chaque printemps, propose une approche intime d’univers plastiques aussi variés que riches à travers les regards d’artistes de la jeune création contemporaine.
Cette première édition invite le spectateur à une conversation entre Julie Legrand et Romain Rivière dont les recherches récurrentes sur certains thèmes et médiums proposent des démarches presque sérielles, voire obsessionnelles. L’espace de la galerie se transforme en une déambulation autour de leurs médiums favoris, le travail du verre de Julie Legrand et celui de la photographie de Romain Rivière. L’univers de l’un répond à celui de l’autre à travers une scénographie à la fois dense et radicale.
Julie Legrand manie le verre à travers des recherches déroutantes dont les caprices ébranlent l’oeil du spectateur. L’artiste confronte la fragilité de ce matériau à des éléments plus bruts, tels le pneu de moto ou l’éponge, et apporte à l’ensemble une vision décalée. Ecart volontaire, le verre semble vouloir s’échapper de l’ambiguité qui l’oppose à ses supports. « Un certain rapport entre immobilisme et mouvement anime mes installationsqui, pour la plupart, si elles ne bougent pas, sont en tension, pèsent, poussent, appuient, serrent, relient, s’écoulent, s’épanchent, s’attirent, s’aimantent», explique l’artiste.
Les photographies de Romain Rivière se posent à la frontière entre l’esthétisme le plus direct et l’analyse sociétale. Les images parfaitement maîtrisées se heurtent au sens caché d’une analyse acerbe des antinomies actuelles de notre civilisation, exacerbation des envies d’un monde occidental contradictoire. Ce sont des enseignes publicitaires créées de toutes pièces mais photographiées de dos, comme pour leur confiner un sens anodin voire incertain malgré leurs façades aux allures ultra colorées et revendicatives. Ce sont des cabanes de pêcheurs à la limite entre images de favelas et rêve de retour à la nature de l’homme occidental. Mais ces cabanes s’enflamment et mettent en exergue l’éventuelle obsolescence d’un monde fait de contradiction, tiraillé entre les différentes utopies qui régissent nos sociétés.
