Duncan Wylie portrays a monumental character who is both a dowser and a whistle-blower. He searches for water close to springs and carries a whistle to his mouth in case the authorities arrive to condemn street vending. Half the canvas is taken up by cactus, a natural reserve of life-giving and energy-giving water, revealing modern buildings, a sign of the West's presence and power in Africa.
